[English Expressions]

The headlines of the Korean media, which had been dominated by the Choi Soon-sil scandal, were recently replaced by surprising news from the US Donald Trump's upset victory in the presidential election.

Up until the day before the election, most Korean news reports simply relayed the US media's evaluations and predicted that Hillary Clinton would be the likely winner.

◆ Up until the day before N :

Already pretty familiar with reports on Trump's inappropriate comments about women and minorities, many Koreans say they can't understand why American voters are sending such an underqualified candidate to the White House.

◆ already pretty familiar with :

The most cited reason for Trump's victory is frustration over Washington politics, mostly by white middle to lower class Americans. Regardless of the US's status as a superpower, the livelihood of everyday Americans has been seen as deteriorating since the 2008 financial crisis.

◆ the most cited reason for N :

Whatever the real reasons for Trump's victory are, what Koreans should do now is brace themselves for the changes Trump will bring to Asia, especially Korea. Before being elected, he reiterated that Korea should pay more for stationing US troops on its soil. He also said that the Korea-US free trade agreement is unfairly in favor of Korea and should be revised. Many

◆ brace themselves for the changes :

◆ stationing US troops on its soil :

Koreans are concerned that his election may bring one more challenge to their country, which is already faced with many problems - political, economic, and diplomatic. The worries are all the more severe as the country is currently suffering, due to the political scandal, from lack of leadership to steer it in this time of transition.

◆ be concerned that : 염려하다 (is concerning that 이 아님에 주의)

◆ the worries are all the more severe :

[English Expressions] Same difference / Back in the day

Same difference

A : I want to buy this pen.
B : Um.. sorry sir, but this is not exactly a pen, that is a pencil.
A : Whatever.. same difference, I just want to get it.

Back in the day

I was so famous in my high school back in the day.

Do have to do with

What does have to do with this situation?

Suit yourself

- I'm going pass on the wine for tonight
- Suit yourself
